Stratford Town Hall
STRATFORD, P.E.I. - The P.E.I. Coalition for Women in Government is encouraging women to put their names forward in the Stratford byelection scheduled for May 1.
Diane Griffin vacated her Ward 2-Stewart Cove council seat after being appointed to the Senate.
The coalition says municipal government is often assumed to be a more accessible avenue for women entering politics because it doesn’t require party affiliation or a nomination process, but percentages of women in municipal governments across Canada, including P.E.I., are well below parity.
According to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, 31 per cent of municipal councillors in P.E.I. are women. In Stratford, Gail MacDonald is the only sitting woman councillor.
“If we want to see more representation of women in leadership, we must encourage and support women to run,” said the coalition’s executive director Dawn Wilson.
“Do you know a woman in Stratford who would be an outstanding municipal councillor? Ask her to run. Volunteer for her campaign. And encourage others to do the same.”
Those who want to run as a candidate have until 2 p.m, on Friday, April 7 to submit their paperwork for candidacy.
