A new private school providing what it calls a holistic, joyful and developmental approach to education will open in Charlottetown this fall.

The Montessori School will offer kindergarten through Grade 6 with plans to expand to middle and secondary classes in the future.

Curriculum will be based on the child development discoveries, methods and teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori that are in practice at more than 22,000 schools worldwide.

The school's website highlights the following as priorities of developmental learning: individual learning plans for every student; mixed age-range classes; small class sizes; uninterrupted periods of learning every day; teachers as guides; a true interdisciplinary approach.

The Montessori School is not to be confused with the Island Montessori Academy, which first opened in Charlottetown in 2001.

A second school was opened in Stratford in 2007 with a third school opening in Cornwall three years later.
