A 31-year-old Emerald-area woman died this morning after her car hit a tree in Newton.

At 5:40 a.m. Prince District RCMP, Island EMS and the Kinkora Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle collision on Route 111.

The woman died on impact after her car slid off the road and hit a tree.

She was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

The RCMP are still investigating the accident, but believe distracted driving and driving too fast for road conditions were contributing factors.

It was the second fatal accident in P.E.I. this week after a 59-year-old woman died near Tignish Monday.
