SUMMERSIDE - Three years, three deputy mayors.

Summerside Mayor Bill Martin said Wednesday that three veteran city councillors, Norma McColeman, Frank Costa and Brent Gallant, will each sit as deputy mayor for a one-year term for the remainder of the current council’s mandate.

Gallant will be the first to take on the position, sworn in during the levee at City Hall on Friday.

“I selected them based on the fact that they have several years of experience on council,” said Martin. “Brent has served four terms on council, Norma has probably three, maybe four, and Frank, this is his second for sure.”

The mayor said by appointing the three senior councillors to the position it will give a new mayor “people with experience to choose from” after Martin's term is complete.

McColeman will be sworn in as deputy mayor on Jan. 1, 2017, followed by Costa, who will serve in the position during the last year in the current council’s mandate.

Bruce MacDougall announced he was stepping down effective immediately at the December council meeting.
