Man handed 18 months in jail for stealing from elderly woman

A 22-year old Charlottetown man who stole more than $23,000 from an 83-year old woman was sentenced Friday in Supreme Court to serve 18 months in the provincial correctional centre.

The sentence was imposed in the case of Mitchell Donovan.

In addition to the time he will spend in custody he will spend two years on probation, during which time he must undergo assessment, counseling and treatment for his addictions.

Donovan must also refrain absolutely from any contact with the victim and write a letter of apology to her.

He must refrain from contact with any people named by his probation officer.

He must also do 50 hours of community service work.

Restitution must be made to the victim of $23,850.07
