Driver inattention has caused many of the motor vehicle accidents that have occurred around Charlottetown over the past month.

Sgt. Jennifer McCarron with Charlottetown Police Services said in the past 30 days there have been 87 incidents of motor vehicle collisions.

Some have been reportable where the damage was over $1,000; most were non-reportable, such as minor fender-benders, McCarron said.

“It’s mostly distracted driving. Whether it’s stress or whatever it is, people aren’t paying attention.”

McCarron said drivers should keep a distance between themselves and the vehicle in front of them. And everyone should use common sense.

“If your cell phone’s a distraction and you can’t not look at it, put it somewhere and turn it off. That’s the issue, people hear that ding and they feel they have to check their phone.”

Theft in vehicles also continues to be an issue in Charlottetown, and the public is urged not to keep any valuables in their automobiles.

Overnight Thursday alone there were six reports of cars being broken into, primarily in the Sherwood area.

There are lots of patrol cars in the area, but McCarron said when suspects wear dark clothes and are on foot, it’s easy for them to slip into the shadows and remain unseen.

Anyone who sees or hears anything out of the norm is asked to call their local authorities.
