A 27-year-old man who worked for three years in the Royal Canadian Navy has been sentenced to six months in jail for a break and enter Dec. 1 at Murphy’s West Royalty Pharmacy.

Tyler Alan Inman of North Tryon appeared before chief judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown April 18 for sentencing.

Inman has been in custody since Feb. 21 after previously pleading guilty to the break and enter as well as stealing from a former roommate and breaching an undertaking.

Inman has a prior related criminal record.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald expressed concern for Inman and the direction he is heading after reading the presentence report.

“When you look at the presentence report, there is just no other way to say it, Mr. Inman is not a well man,” said MacDonald.

MacDonald says Inman’s addiction issues have cost him a career in the Royal Canadian Navy and have had a very significant impact on his mental health and personal relationships.

The court heard Inman has sought treatment and hospitalization but has yet to seriously address his underlying issues.

“From the Crown’s perspective, this road only goes in one direction and at the end of it, it’s not a very good sight,” said MacDonald.

Defence attorney Yolande Murphy said when Inman has his addiction issues under control, he is described as being “kind, sweet and a productive individual”.

She also adds, to his credit, Inman had a $5,000 accounts receivable balance from previous charges and has since paid it down to $150.

In sentencing, Orr spent some time speaking with Inman, trying to bring the message home that he needs to address his addiction issues.
“You are at very serious point in your life, Mr. Inman, as to whether you are going to have a life,” said Orr.

Inman was sentenced to six months in jail for the break and enter and 15 days in jail for stealing from his former roommate.

He was also sentenced to 15 days in jail, concurrent to his other sentences, for breaching and undertaking.

He was credited for time a half served since Feb. 21.

Inman must pay $300 to the victims of crime fund and $662 restitution to Murphy’s West Royalty Pharmacy.

He must provide a DNA sample and is on probation for two years following his release.
