CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - For the past two months, P.E.I. singer-songwriter Rose Cousins has been on a major road trip.

Starting in Washington, D.C., and making her way to Los Angeles and back to the East Coast, she has zigzagged between American and Canadian cities, performing in cafés, churches and concert halls in support of her new album, “Natural Conclusion”.

At every stop, the 12-track CD received positive reviews.

“The songs that I’m getting the most reaction to are ‘Donoughmore’ and ‘Grace’. It’s also surprising that people will come up and tell me about a song they heard after the show, so I’m pleased that every song will get a hit at some point,” says the Kensington native during a telephone interview.

After clocking in thousands of kilometres, there’s no sign of road weariness in her voice. Instead, positive energy vibrates through the telephone line as she talks enthusiastically about her April 8 show in Charlottetown.

“It’s the concert that I’m most excited about. I’m ending my tour on P.E.I. with my parents and my family in the audience; with people who have known me the very longest so the significance of it couldn’t be any deeper,” says Cousins of her concert Saturday at the Homburg Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

She’s also thrilled to be invited to perform as part of the Live @the Centre series.

“Growing up on P.E.I., playing at the Confederation Centre was the biggest gig of my life. That’s how it feels in my heart. It’s also the ‘Anne of Green Gables’ stage. And, though it’s not the biggest venue I’ve performed in, it’s equally significant. And it’s home.”

“It’s more than a concert. It’s a celebration of all the things that have happened to me so far,” she says.

Although Cousins has been on the road for the past two months, her new album, “Natural Conclusion” was a much longer journey. In 2012, following the release of her Juno award-winning CD, ‘We Made a Spark’ she took a well-needed break from touring.

“I had tired myself out. It’s hard to be constantly in motion,” says Cousins, who directed her creativity to taking and developing photographs and travelling to different cities to explore the world of co-writing.

“I worked to expand my catalogue of music with people I didn’t know for the sake of creating great songs. I didn’t know whether I was going to sing them.”

Cousins found a match for her creativity in Grammy award-winning producer Joe Henry on one of these trips.

“Joe is a poet, a thoughtful, contemplative writer. That poetry and thoughtfulness transfers to his approach in production,” she says.

Five years later their collaboration led to “Natural Conclusion”, which includes two songs, ‘Chains’ and ‘White Flag’ that she co-wrote.

“I thought I was making a direct pass but I realized there was a nice bridge between my co-writing and performance world.”
