CDPEC was 'worn-out' moniker, treasurer tells MLA print this article

The Opposition Conservatives says the P.E.I. government owes horse owners an apology for changing the name of the Charlottetown Driving Park but Provincial Treasurer Wes Sheridan described the name as a ‘worn-out moniker’ that did not resonate with off-Island visitors.
Conservative Mike Currie raised the issue during question period on Thursday. He also spoke for nearly two hours on a motion supporting both the Charlottetown and Summerside racetracks.
“I don’t think the industry was fully behind it because they read about it in the newspaper, about this backroom deal that you guys had done,” Currie
said during question period.
“I think you owe them an apology for not coming forward and discussing this with the industry stakeholders.”
Last July, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, which operates the driving park and casino, changed the name to Red Shores Racetrack & Casino.
Gone with the name change, many in the harness racing industry raged, was more than 100 years of tradition that had grown into a household name for players throughout North America.
But a last-minute tweaking of the name seemed to quell a lot of the concerns.
That tweaking resulted in the facility being called Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The Summerside track was named Red Shores at Summerside Raceway.
Sheridan said the new name is working and Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park is now making money after bleeding red ink since it opened its doors in 2007.
He said the harness racing industry is now behind the new name.
“As we know, the Charlottetown Driving Park and the Summerside Raceway are legendary names right across the industry,”
said Sheridan, who is responsible for harness racing.
“But we do have to move into the 21st century.”
Sheridan said if P.E.I. was going to compete in the industry, especially with the construction of a new casino in Moncton that is slated to open next year, the name had to change.
He said focus groups overwhelmingly endorsed Red Shores.
“Everyone realized the CDPEC was a worn-out moniker that was not working with regard to drawing people from off-Island.”
Red Shores in Charlottetown is home to 210 VLTs, six live poker tables, and live and simulcast harness racing.
P.E.I.’s harness racing industry is worth more than $40 million, the industry says.
During question period, Currie asked a number of cabinet ministers including Agriculture Minister George Webster, Labour Minister Carolyn Bertram, Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron MacKinley and Education Minister Gerard Greenan if they
supported the name change.
“Red Shores at Summerside Raceway is certainly a name I can live with,” Greenan said.
MacKinley and the others had a similar response, except MacKinley had a difficult time remembering the new name.
“Yes, I’m in favour of calling it, what was it? Red Shore Driving Park at the Charlottetown Driving Park. No. Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.”

losers from PEI writes: I'm 17 at the Rural. The only time I have ever stepped a foot into the racetrack was to go to the exhibition. The same goes for most of my friends. I live near Raceway Park and have never stepped a foot in there either - same with most kids. Kids don't dig racing horses and stock cars. Those days are gone. Sorry ppl. Your future is UP!

railbird from Charlottetown, PE writes: Just exactly how many tourists come to PEI for the races and for how long?? The rest of us live here and thought, until told otherwise by ALC, the CDP was part of our heritiage. We are still smarting from the disrespect shown us by our government. If Sheridan wants to see a worn out monkier...look in the mirror. Bye Bye to politicians who ignore their constituents.

Johnnystorm from PE writes: How in the heck could Currie talk for two hours on the value of the tracks? Perhaps we should have someone train our politicans to be a bit more succinct (that's a big word for a fella from down east).

Dick Buttkiss from Charlottetown, PE writes: They needed a new name badly and the name they have now is perfect if you ask me. There was no identity for the Racino because it was just considered the Entertainment Center....the word casino or racino wasn't in the name at all. Now, they have a great name and an actual identity. Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at The Charlottetown Driving Park sounds perfect to me. Both the racetrack and the racino are advertised. I'm glad they left CDP in the name because it is a well known place around North America for horse racing.....but to call the whole thing the CDPEC just wasn't working.

Railbird from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Mr Buttkiss I ask you what has the name change done for the bet at CDP or whatever you would like to call it. The name change will not do a single bit for either establishment, but is the first step toward shutting down harness racing which may take a few years to do but it will happen. The Chtown Driving Park took alot more people to the Island then the racino ever did or will but is the first step for the ALC with government behind it. Just watch!

Justanotherislander from PEI writes: Mr. Sheridan, you better hope your 'off Island visitors' are around to vote for you at the next election, because Islanders have very long memories, and some think you and this government are truly 'worn out monikers'. Up to this time, I have always been a Liberal supporter, but THIS government will never see a second term!! There have been so many arrogant, selfish, and sometimes morally corrupt decisions made by this government. You forgot who elected you. Those electors will also see that you go down in defeat.

Logger Pete from PEI writes: Just how much are we paying these MLAs? How is it possible that there is nothing more importent for these politicians to talk about? And people wonder why PEI is the laughing stock that it is. Well, I guess that's the Island Way (not meant as a compliment)

Bob from PEI writes: People seem to think the new name came out of nowhere, I'm sure there were focus groups (one way glass) with PEI residents and all sorts of marketing meetings.

If they want to compete with Moncton Casino they better get Blackjack, Roulette, Craps etc. people don't care about the name or the look of the place they want to go to a real casino.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
