Man uses gun, not remote control on TV Breaking News print this article
Transcontinental Media

SUMMERSIDE – He wanted to turn off his TV but instead of grabbing the remote, Todd Francis Jollimore reached for his .45-calibre handgun.
In Summerside Provincial Court this week, the 43-year-old French River man pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm and to growing marijuana.
The charges stem from an incident July 29.
A neighbour, concerned about Jollimore after the death of his uncle earlier in the day, went to check on him. When he saw the TV screen broken he called police.
Jollimore told police he was watching TV and decided to shut it off with a shot from his handgun.
Police found a shell casing by the TV. The neighbour had already removed the handgun and a shotgun from the home. Jollimore was arrested and jailed overnight.
Police returned the next day with a search warrant and found improperly stored ammunition and 12 small- to medium-sized marijuana plants. Also found were marijuana leaves drying, lights used to grow marijuana plants and chemicals.
Jollimore told police he was growing marijuana as a home remedy for his arthritis although he had no authorization to do so from Health Canada.
He had no previous record.
Defence attorney Yolande Richard said when the incident occurred Jollimore was distraught over the death earlier in the day of his uncle. He had found the man and tried unsuccessfully to save him.
Richard noted Jollimore has since received a certificate permitting him to use marijuana for medical purposes.
Judge Jeff Lantz suspended the passing of sentence on the careless use of a firearm charge and placed Jollimore on probation for 18 months.
On the drug charge, Jollimore was fined $1,000 and placed on probation for 18 months.
Jollimore was also ordered to pay $200 in victim surcharges, to forfeit the handgun for disposal and to undergo assessment, counselling and treatment for any mental health issues.
He’s also prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years.

Crazy from Alberta writes: Virgil Spencer's got a nineteen-inch Hitachi
And many demons lingering
Friday night he pulled a gun to change the channel
Something that he picked up from the King
His wife remembers well the man she knew
Seems the dreams she had have all turned black and blue
She's wasted years
No time for tears

Just thought this verse suited the situation well. Sorry about yer uncle man.

Shadowhawk from Nova Scotia writes: Did I miss something? He was ordered to pay a $200. victim surcharge. Wasn't the TV the only victim ? Wasn't it his own TV? Although I don't agree with his method, I think it is still ok to destroy something you own if you wanted to... isn't it?

Mr Cranky from Charlottetown, PE writes: If you own a pistol, it has to be trigger locked and out of sight the whole time, unloaded, at least 10 ft away from the bullets. If you discharge a pistol in your home intentionally, you COULD get as much as 5 years in prison and/or a huge fine. If he took a baseball bat to his TV, he's within his right. If the pistol is legally registered to him, he's in less trouble, but the fact it was loaded, unlocked, used intentionally in a non-designated area or shooting range, and if he was intoxicated, and of course did not report the incident to the cops - AND he's growing weed, well, he's in deep doo and will likely lose his Posession and Acquisition License.

Robert Jacobs from Stockton, manatoba writes: You have got to be kidding me? This guy has no record and they took his hand gun and now he can't own a gun for 10 years because he shot his own TV? What is up in Canada? OMG that would never happen here in the states! Talk about infringing on someone's rights! LOL

Deb from NS writes: Maybe next time he wants to get the garbage on television out of his sight, he'll use the baseball bat.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
