Heatley is misunderstood: family friend WAYNE SCANLAN Canwest News Service
OTTAWA— If it’s Tuesday, then Dany Heatley is being flogged somewhere.
On the Internet. On talk radio. In a newspaper.
That’s how it has been for the National Hockey League scoring star since his trade request from the Ottawa Senators was made public during the Stanley Cup final.
Tom Molloy, an international hockey coach and former neighbour of the Heatleys, says the one-sided Heatley bashing from fans and media has been difficult for the family.
“Dany’s parents (Murray and Karin) dropped over to our place the other day,” Molloy said by telephone from Calgary. “They said, ‘Everyone is crucifying Dany.’ His mother is very upset. And the attacks are all personal stuff, about his character. Nobody mentions that this is a guy who gives up a month of his summer every year to play for Team Canada (at the IIHF world championship).”
Molloy wrote a letter to Ottawa Citizen sports department because the Heatleys told him they didn’t have “a forum” to express the other side of the story.
The Heatley camp, including the two-time 50-goal man himself, doesn’t see the merit in speaking out so close to the July 1 launch of NHL free agency and a potential trade. Molloy is trying to get out the story of a strong player wanting to be a go-to guy.
“Nobody talks about all the good he has done,” Molloy said, “or that his teammates like him.”
According to Molloy, Heatley was with many of those teammates at a “bachelor party” last week for Senators centre Jason Spezza, Heatley’s longtime linemate.
“This is an organizational thing,” Molloy said. “Wade Redden was crucified in Ottawa despite all the work he did for underprivileged kids. They ran him off.
“Marian Hossa signed a contract (with previous Senators management) and then they traded him the next day to Atlanta.
“If I was the owner of the Senators, I’d be calling my manager in and say, ‘Why don’t guys want to play here anymore?’ ”
Molloy has 17 years of experience coaching hockey at the Canadian college and university levels, including eight years as a University of Calgary assistant in the 1990s. He used to instruct Heatley, provide him extra ice at Molloy’s international clinics for kids. One summer, the extra ice helped Heatley become a midget triple-A scoring star in Calgary. Molloy spent last season as a development coach in Salzburg, Austria, and he has co-developed a coaching video called Hockey Coaching ABCs.
Molloy’s letter to the newspaper began this way:
“I can’t express how disappointed I am in the press and hockey fans concerning Dany Heatley’s request to be traded. I was talking with his parents . . . and they can’t believe the awful things that people are saying about Dany. He simply wants to play on a team that believes in his abilities.
“The new coach (Cory Clouston) has decided that Dany is a second- or third-line player, uses him on the second power play and plays him 14 minutes a game. Dany had many closed door conversations with him and was told that the situation would improve, but it didn’t in the two months they were together.”
Though he was used on the second-unit power play, referring to Heatley as a “second- or third-line player” under Clouston is a stretch. Though his ice time did dip, Heatley usually played alongside Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson on the first line.
“I have been in this game for a long time and make my living coaching hockey,” Molloy wrote. “I see Dany making the right plays and doing his job defensively. Dany isn’t a hitter, but he wins his one-on-one battles using skill. I ask myself, ‘How can a guy with the best one timer in hockey, and great vision, be on the second power play?’ ”
BEGINOPTIONALTRIM
Some other interesting tidbits from this Heatley family friend:
• Heatley was injured in Game 1 of the 2007 Stanley Cup final against the Anaheim Ducks when Chris Pronger “cross-checked Dany and then sat on him.” After that chest injury, Heatley was not effective the rest of the series, Molloy said.
• The Senators decline since ’07 was a factor in Heatley wanting out.
“Two years ago they looked like the old Montreal Canadiens,” Molloy said, “but they haven’t been able to right the ship since.”
ENDOPTIONALTRIM
There is no question Heatley’s power-play production fell off noticeably under Clouston. Past the halfway mark of the season under Craig Hartsburg, Heatley had 11 power-play goals. In the final 33 games with Clouston, Heatley scored four.
Heatley also saw his ice time drop in many games — a shockingly low 12 minutes 44 seconds on Feb. 11 — though he played significant minutes, 23:07 and 22:24 over the final two games of the season.
Molloy surmises, and this will make management cringe, that maybe the Senators wanted to force Heatley to move by making things difficult for him.
“Alfie is a god,” Molloy said of Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, “and nobody wants Spezza in a trade.”
Is it too late to resolve this mess and patch things up between Heatley and the Senators organization?

You know why it didn't improve? Because his play and work ethic didn't improve. Just because Heatley is a star player doesn't mean that he should automatically get 20 minutes a game and number one power play time. You have to earn your time on the ice like everyone else, and he most certainly didn't. Everyone calls him an elite scorer, but in watching every single Ottawa Senator game I could for the past 5+ years, Heatley should score MORE than 50 goals. He gets an uncountable number of chances thanks to his line mates, and capitalizes on about, 1 of 5. If he had the touch of a real elite scorer, he should capitalize on at least 3 of 5 chances. He was punished for not working hard enough, and the punishment stayed when he continued to not work hard. If he worked as hard as a player like, Ryan Shannon, he would be an unstoppable force, but alas, he is a whiny selfish baby, and I can't wait for the day when he's disappointing another team and their fan base.

Balk from Ontario writes: If Marian Hossa truly wanted to stay, then he would not have been so stubborn in insisting on a 6 million dollar deal, which would've made it difficult for the Sens to keep players like Alfie and Spezza.
Dany Heatley:
A superstar who was given a second chance by Ottawa because he killed his teammate Dan Snider in Atlanta
A superstar who wanted to be an assistant captain and take on a bigger role
A player who refused to adapt to a coach's system even though the team finally looked like it was going in the right direction
A baby and coward who still hasn't man up and explain to the city why he is about to rob it for 4 million dollars
If the city is harsh on Heatley, it's cause he hasn't done enough to resolve it. Of course fans don't know him personally, it's not like he bothered with explaining himself. I'm sure if we all knew him like his parents we might not be as harsh, but we're are not.
I don't even want him gone, I want him to come back so I get my fair share of boos in for paying part of that 4 million.

lbh from pei writes: Has anyone considered perhaps it isnt heatleys attitude or greed or anything about him personally. Perhaps he is simply the first one to want out and is fed up with a team that has slowly declined over the years. Perhaps behind the scenes and in the dressing room, their is trouble brewing that he wants nothing to do with, perhaps alfredson isnt such the great leader some make him out to be. I know i dont like working at a job that has poor management or leadership, or with fellow employees who cause drama or make life difficult. The senators have had lots of trouble from mcgratton to emery and alfredson. Perhaps heatley just cant take the bs anymore and wants out.

Sparky from Ch'town, PEI writes: Thanks Molloy. At first I thought Heatley was selfish and blamed him for hurting the organization for going public with his trade demand. But now that I hear he plays hockey for Canada and attends his friend's bachelor party, I have changed my mind. Heatley is now a lock for the King Clancy trophy

D from PE writes: WHAT is a CONTRACT in the NHL? Oh something that binds a team to a player if he wants to stay but something that allows a player to pick and choose where he wants to go at will.....Gimme a break. He just signed for 6 years. HONOR the dam thing or quit the NHL!!

Ben from Ontario writes: This Molloy guy sounds like as big a loser as Heatley is. Waaaaah 2nd power play. Holy crap, so that's the reason this guy is turning his back on his adopted city??? Wow, excuses abound. I guess the 50 million dollars isn't enough to make him feel wanted...Oh no, he needs to get 25 minutes a game and play on the 1st power play. What a baby. If his mom and dad are so concerned about perceptions, why don't they get mr spoiled brat to say SOMETHING. He hasn't said ONE THING since this whole thing began. He prefers to hide in the corner I guess.

All i got from the article is Heatley is selfish and not a team player and if his team isn;t playing well he bails! Nice Dany Nice!
Say Heatley...stop hiding behind your mommy's dress and say something for yourself instead of letting other people talk for you. That shows me your character right there......a whiny....I can't take for myself...selfish person! Nice!

No longer a Sens Fan from PEI writes: Heatley is not the issue and his wanting out really has nothing to do with icetime. The only problem Ottawa has is from Brian Murrray. The Senators are currently paying for three head coaches. Two fired ones and Clouston. So were all he coaches horrible or was it interference from Murray as that what it looks like to hockey insiders. Murray has to go because withn the talent the team has there has to be a reason for the poor performance. So forget about Heatley he is not the problem. The real question is why are the senators an undeachieving team consistently. Brian Murray is the answer.

allan clory from pei writes: what are most of you talking about !!you obviously not know what you are talking about.it all comes down to the coach his job is to motivate players no matter how much of a star they are if they are playing bad the it is a simple conversation and i really mean talking and listening to them to figure out why they are playing bad or not motivated..
so if the coaches will listen more to what the players are telling them they will be more productive

Dean M from Calgary, Alberta writes: Good article. By most of the comments it's not hard to see how a lot people feed off the negative stuff. I just hope Healtley's parents realize this would probably happen to Alex Ovechkin if he requested a trade. People generally look for something to talk about and they continually feed off each other; it probably gives them a sense of participation. Ottawa Senators, and fans are naturally upset they are losing a player so the good things Heatley does or the good person he is likely gets overlooked. Hornets might be good for the environment, but if you swat the nest chances are they won't be too friendly.

Still A Sens Fan; Not A Deserter from Charlottetown, PE writes: Heatley is a good hockey player. Sometimes they do not produce like we feel they should, but armchair hockey is so, so, so easy to be so, so, so critical.
The problem with this hockey team is not Heatley! Was not Reddin! Was not Hossa! And not the coaches that were previously fired! Point blank: the person that needs to go is Brian Murray. Only then will this team turn around, but it will with Murray gone.

Alan from pei writes: Dany Heatley signed a bonified contract that must have morals clauses. How could these not include some repercussions for basically breaking such contract by demanding a trade? Then he invokes his no trade to keep Edmonton at bay and will still get his $4million signing bonus, while essentially breaking his word and contract to the Sens. The contract seems to only protect a childish , spoiled player who looks like he's putting himself above his team. How can the NHL or anyone in their right mind think he will fulfill his term if he goes elsewhere? Will he demand to be traded again if he dosen't get his perceived due ice time minutes? As for being misunderstood, maybe Dany should be a man and explain why he has put the Sens in the spot they're in. Maybe trying to force a trade that was signed only a year ago should mean there is no longer a BONUS and NO TRADE for the team to deal with.

keith from Charlottetown, PEI writes: I agree with others on Murray, has to be the worst manager a team could ever have. What did he do in Detroit with good teams? That should have told Ottawa what they were getting other than a good dresser. As for Heatley let him sit at home which will ruin his Camadian Olympic chances, after a few months he might change his mind
