Canada Games organizers forced to buy beach volleyball sand from N.S. print this article
The Canadian Press

The red sand of P.E.I. may make for stunning postcards, but it doesn’t measure up when it comes to the exacting standards of international beach volleyball.
Organizers of the 2009 Canada Games say contractors had to buy 750 tonnes of sand from neighbouring Nova Scotia after they learned the Island’s fine sand is too easily compacted.
That means Island sand is great for building sandcastles, but it’s a potential safety hazard for leaping athletes requiring soft landings, says Robert Arsenault, facilities co-ordinator for the Games, which start Aug. 15.
“The particles have to be like ball bearings — they can’t compact,” he said in an interview. “When you put pressure on them, they just move out of the way and your foot goes to the bottom of it.”
Arsenault said eight samples of sand were tested from across the Island, including some from the province’s famous beaches and its lesser-known, inland gravel pits.
Simply put, none of it was “fluffy” enough.
“This was a very hard specification to meet,” Arsenault said, noting that Volleyball Canada follows a set of international rules that clearly define the size and shape of the coarse sand particles required for top-level competition.
And aside from the compaction factor, there is also an aesthetic requirement. The sand on the court can’t be too sticky, either.

Our tax dollars at work from PEI writes: Unbelievable. Surrounded by sand and we are spending our tax dollars to get it shipped here.
Let's see what other expenses will start popping up in the near future.

Surprised??? NOPE from PEI writes: MORE WASTEFUL SPENDING!!!

Yet our Hospital Beds are closing again for Staff Summer Vacations! Same for years but STILL OUR GOVERMENT can't find the money to provide the required hospital staff, radiologists, equipment, specialists, technicians, ETC ETC ETC ETC!!!!!

BUT THEY HAVE THE MONEY FOR 750 TONS OF FLUFFY SAND FROM Nova Scotia!!! SURPRISED? NO WAY!!!!
IT's the Canada Games after all and we ALL KNOW THAT'S MORE IMPORTANT THAN ISLANDERS' HEALTH and LIVES!

Priorities - The Critical Choices our Goverment Chooses not to make!

No one understands from PEI writes: Its for the safety of the athletes morons

Itd be like saying, Why pay for a refridgeration system for the rink when we can open the doors and let mother nature freeze water for us

These are the kinds of expenses that it takes for the Canada Games to work.

As a former volleyball player PEI sand doesnt work for competitive beach volleyball.

Deal with it

The Observer from Stratford, PE writes: The red sand of PEI is quite unique. If its not good enough for the organizers of beach volleyball then maybe this so-called sport should not be included in the upcoming games. Face it, the only reason BB is so popular in the first place has nothing to do with the athletic prowess of the participants.

To the Observer from PEI writes: You realize the Canada Games committee for PEI doesn't make decisions what sports are in and out of the games

PEI sand is not acceptable as per the GOVERNING BODY OF VOLLEYBALL. Why is this so hard to understand.

They also spent $200,000 on a portable floor for the Wellness Centre for basketball when there are countless other basketball gyms already.

Its another cost of putting on the Games. They would have used PEI sand if it was ideal.

You people are all a bunch of whiners.

To No one Understands from PEI writes: Morons?

You underestimate Islanders' intelligence!

My objection is - Why should I care about the safety of the athletes? I don't care about the Canada Games period! I don't care about the Olympic Games! I view both as a TOTAL MORONIC WASTE OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS that could be put to MUCH BETTER USE! Like the many needs facing our HOSPITAL !

SO why should I have to be TAXED so a bunch of athletes can have a good time and smile on Canada Camera whilst showing their BICEPS and PROWNESS???

There are millions of children starving all over the world and the millions of $$$$ spent on such utter foolishness could feed them for a lifetime! Or save a few lives on PEI by contributing the same to the our Health Care Dept!

Take a Board and a Ball and find a field for a Ball Game that's we did! It was free and fun!

MORONS??? UTTER WASTE of Tax payers dollars is what's MORONIC!
Be you sure to go early and get a good seat! Don't saving me one I won't be there or anywhere near!

To The Observer from PEI writes: DO YOU REALIZE????? ALL THESE $$$$$$ is for a ONE TIME Event that won't be on PEI again untill ???????

DO YOU REALIZE the many more important, critical, Useful projects all these dollars could FUND on PEI??? For the people who live here year round and are now doing without????

DO YOU REALIZE your statement, Its another cost of putting on the Games, is not a justifiable reason for spending Islanders hard earned tax dollars on a one time Event that most likely will cost Millions more than it will contribute in profits to Islanders???

TO YOUR: They would have used PEI sand if it was ideal. I'll tell you what's IDEAL - Tell the GOVERNING BODY OF THE Volleyball to PAY for their IDEAL SAND if PEI's isn't good enough for them! Try that one ! And then YOU MIGHT just REALIZE how important the Canada Games are when those involved in athletics have to pay for their Very Expensive PASS TIME!

And Oh, maybe YOU should REALIZE your Arrogance in thinking just because it's the Canada Games all Islanders should SHELL OUT and BOW DOWN to the NEEDS of those who want a chance to SHINE and BE # 1 isn't the mind set of all Islanders!

Maybe all the athletes could devote their earnings at their summer jobs toward paying down the debt for these extravagances!

sensible shoes from pei writes: Just to put this in prospective:
How many nurses an you pay for the summer with the same dollars as it will cost to bring sand here?
Here is a quote from this newspaper today on the closure of beds in hospitals for the summer so staff can take time off. I agree they work hard and need time off, but why not replace them for the summer months with those retired nurses who double-dip anyway???
Here is the quote:

“The planned annual slowdown is scheduled so that we can provide our dedicated staff the chance to take time off during the summer vacation period,” said Doug Currie, Health Minister. “It is important that staff have a chance to enjoy well-deserved time off during the summer. As in previous years, the planned bed closures will provide staff opportunity while ensuring minimal interruption of service to Islanders.”

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
