Maritime Electric is continuing its efforts to restore power to large sections of Charlottetown after a fire in the West Royalty substation knocked the entire city, all Kings County and parts of eastern Queens, into the dark Monday morning.

More than 2,00 customers were still without power at 10 p.m. Monday, more than 12 hours after electricity was lost mid-morning.

Maritime Electric spokesperson Kim Griffin said power may not be restored to some customers until midnight or later. She said damage was extensive to a switichg station in West Royalty and the company was tryng to re-route power to customers still in the dark, on a station by station basis.

Maritime Electric was using Island generation most of Monday.

Power first went out in parts of the city at 9:19 a.m. and company officials then shut power down to more than 55,000 customers in central and eastern sections of the province just before 10 a.m. as a precaution until a damage assessment was completed in West Royalty.

Power began returning to parts of the city just after 11 a.m. but remained out for large sections of Charlottetown into the mid-afternoon.

All schools in the Eastern School District closed three hours early because of the major outage.

Griffin said that by 2:20 p.m., some 11,000 customers in Charlottetown were without power. Areas most affected included Inkerman, Brighton, Mt Edward Road, parts of downtown Charlottetown and Sherwood.

"There was a fair bit of damage at the West Royalty substation. We're still assessing the extent," said Griffin. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Company repair crews and engineers began working on repairs and power began to return to eastern P.E.I. and sections of the city shortly after 11 a.m.

The first outage occurred at 9:19 a.m. which knocked out Mt. Edward Road, University Avenue and Queens Arms areas of Charlottetown, affecting 5,000 customers.

At first, Maritime Electric officials believed it was a pole fire, but shortly after, discovered there was a fire in the West Royalty substation, a major centre for routing power through much of central and eastern P.E.I.

The utility then shut off the power as a safety precaution until the extent of damage was determined, knocking an additional 55,000 customers off the system just before 10 a.m. That shutdown affected the entire city of Charlottetown and surrounding areas and all Kings County.

Also affected by the outage were Hunter River and Rattenbury Road areas.

Charlottetown Fire Department crews, which responded to the first call after 9 a.m., were still on the scene in West Royalty until after 11 a.m. Crews were waiting on the scene while electricity was being restored in case of additional problems.

Griffin said the plan was to start gradually re-energizing the system, starting shortly after 11 a.m. Power was restored to parts of downtown Charlottetown at 11:15 a.m.

Water and fuel are pumped electrically. Security systems for prisons....fun stuff. Without electricity, life would quickly revert back many hundreds of years.

Stupid People from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Thank you Kardinal - I wondered if there was any enlightened posters going to make that little point. Even laptops are battery operated so you could use your celphone as a modem in that case and get online.
or depending on where you live, you could walk across to your neighbors and find power...
I wish someone would pull the plug on posters that make comments without any amount of thought, wisedom or knowledge of what they are talking about. TOOO much speculation on these boards.

kay from PEI writes: stop complaining about the schools being closed and that pei students are not getting an education the reason the kids were sent out was because there was no way that they could get food , for lunch , if they went to a jr or senior high and most of the schools need power to do things , even if the power was back on at your school , the eastern school district made its desicion when there was no power on at all and once they make a desicion they cant change it

Does Maritime Electric not have a back-up system.

How embarrassing.

thinker PEI from PEI writes: On another note, this is a good head's up to have emergency stockpiles on hand.

We, as Islanders, are so accustomed to having outages only in the winter months due to storms, we forget that there are many other factors that can leave us in a lurch.

Hurricane Juan was our first major wake-up call and there will be many more, whether they be weather or pandemic related.

Make sure you are prepared as best you can be, if it is possible. I am trying to do so.

Chris S from Charlottetown, PEI writes: @Marie: maritime Electric sent the backup money to Fortis who used it to raise dividends again this year. Don't worry though , the fire clean up should only run us and extra 5cents a kw/h or so.

And yes, we King County folks have
read the web page for Maritime Electric. As Follows.........

Prepare for Power Outages in Advance
Prepare an emergency kit and place it in an area that is easily accessible to you and your family. Here's a list of emergency supplies to have in your emergency kit:

•fresh water,
•flashlights and batteries,
•battery-operated transistor radio and clock,
•cell phone,
•candles and waterproof matches or lighter,
•extra blankets, coats, hats and gloves,
•plastic garbage bags,
•first aid kit,
•non-perishable foods, such as canned and dried goods,
•disposable tableware and cutlery,
•manual can openers,
•bottled water, and
•a loud whistle (this may come in handy if you have to attract attention).

That loud sound you heard in Charlottetown was a collective whistle! Loud enough for you?

Stop your whining from PEI writes: I'm noticing a lot of people like to complain when school gets closed early. I picked my daughter up at school when the closure was announced and I applaud the Eastern School District for making the right call. By noontime the power had been off for nearly two hours, the emergency lights had gone out as the batteries only last an hour or so (so I'm told), the hallways were completely dark. As far as I'm concerned, this was a safety issue. The area of my daugher's school did not regain power until nearly suppertime. Good call Eastern School District!

West Royalty from PEI writes: Our Power just came on 10:25 pm It went out at 9 am We've never lost our power for more than twenty mins over the past six years so I'm not complaining.

In fact, I'd like to thank Maritime Electric for working so diligently and earnestly to restore power to Ch'Town. I won't thank them for their rate increases but I do believe all deserve a thank you and credit when it's due! And I'm sure many employees worked long hours to restore our power.

I think our area must have been one of the last to be restored as we could see lights on throughout the city towards downtown and the TCH and towards Winsloe and also towards Victoria Park.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
