Bill Chandler of Chandler Architecture has been named this year’s overall winner of the Downtown Charlottetown Inc. Christmas window decorating contest.

Chandler’s Christmas window displays, which feature dozens of inflatable penguins, polar bears, reindeer and other creatures, as well as a cheery Santa Claus, occupy a large section of store frontage on Queen Street and continue on to Water Street.

They have been a source of great delight for people of all ages this holiday season.

Chandler’s window display also took first place for exterior store front window.

Second place in that category went to Hearts & Flowers, while third place went to Moonsnail Soapworks.

First place in the interior design category was awarded to the Friends of the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Second Place went to Cottage Industry, while third place was awarded to Anne of Green Gables Chocolates.

Luna Eclectic Emporium, Northern Watters Knitwear, Norton’s Jewelers, Emmett and Ellie’s, Demi Pointe Dance Shop and Robin’s and Ruby’s received honorable mentions.

Other participating businesses included The Bookman, the Bookmark, Jem’s Boutique, Mavor’s, Roots, The Tech Guru, Dows Fashions and Wright’s Redshoes.

A spokeswoman for the organization said while the overall number of participants this year was on a par with last year the number of participants entering both interior and exterior categories increased.

“We would like to thank all of the winners and participants for their outstanding contribution to this years Christmas window decorating contest,” said Dawn Alan, DCI’s executive director. “Be sure to take a wander around downtown to see these great displays.”

The annual Christmas window decorating contest is a friendly competition designed to encourage downtown businesses to decorate their shops, offices and restaurants for the holiday season.

Since it began in 2006 it has become a downtown tradition enjoyed by shoppers, residents, visitors and employees alike.

Maria Maund, project manager for DCI, says the contest is one of DCI’s favourite annual programs and makes shopping downtown a truly special experience.

“Each year we have dozens of businesses participate,” Maund says. “Everyone always puts a great deal of time and effort into their displays...Our 2014 overall winner, Bill Chandler, did such a wonderful job with his window and his effort is greatly appreciated.”
