MAiZE returns for the fifth season with new design

BELFAST — With 12 acres of corn planted and A new mind-boggling design, the Viaene family is bringing the MAiZE craze back to P.E.I.

The popular Belfast labyrinth, that has drawn more than 20,000 visitors in the past, opened to the public Aug. 15. Part of an increasingly popular “agritainment” trend, it will be joined this year by more than 250 affiliated MAiZE sites across the United States, Canada and Europe.

The Viaene maze was designed by Brett Herbst, the world’s leading designer of 2,000-plus corn mazes.

This year’s design, “P.E.I. 2014 Logo”, is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown conference. The MAiZE will give visitors the chance to “get cornfused” up until Oct. 31. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7 pm Sunday to Saturday ; after Sept. 2d, weekends 10 a.m. to dusk. Field trip hours, during weekdays, are available by reservation.
