SUMMERSIDE – After more than a year of preparation Prince Edward Island's first Giant Tiger is on the home stretch to opening day.

The national discount retail chain is taking over much of the space formerly occupied by Zellers in the County Fair Mall in Summerside.

The mall has undergone significant renovations and remodeling to accommodate the new store.

Alison Scarlett, with Giant Tiger, reported recently that they are on schedule for an April 12 grand opening. Staff will start moving into the store on March 20 to set it up.

“We are currently in the process of planning all of our opening day activities.  Giant Tiger will be opening with a ‘roar,’" said Scarlett.

Details of the grand opening are still being nailed down, she added. She could confirm that there will be live music, prizes for the first 50 people in line and various giveaways.

Scarlett also advised that the store recently opened its hiring process to fill 29 full- and part-time positions. Anyone who would like to apply for one of these positions may do so online at

When asked if the store plans a Charlottetown location at some point, Scarlett answered in the negative.

She also introduced the store’s manager as David Bryanton.

“Opening a new Giant Tiger store is incredibly exciting. The energy that comes from the support staff, our associates and the community at large is wonderful,” said Bryanton.

Giant Tiger sells family fashions, work wear, housewares and home fashions, seasonal merchandise and groceries, including fresh produce. The grocery section of the store will encompass about 3,000 square feet of the roughly 24,000-square-foot store.
