Briar Roberts, a Grade 12 student at the Kinkora Regional High School, has committed to the Holland College Hurricanes women’s soccer team for this fall.
The versatile player has played striker, midfield and wing defence and has been an member of the Kinkora varsity, RC United and under-18 provincial teams.
“I’m excited to be joining the women’s soccer team in the fall. It will be a big change going from high school soccer to the collegiate level, but I am looking forward to the challenge,” said Roberts in a release.
“Soccer has always been a huge part of my life and I’m eager to play at the next level. My goal for the soccer season is to balance my studies and athletics. I also want to become a better soccer player.”
In 2011, Roberts traveled with the RC United team to the national under-16 championships in Lethbridge, Alta., and in 2012 she scored the game winning goal in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association provincial championship gold medal game.
“Briar is a very versatile player that can play several positions for us. She is physically strong and combined with great speed will be a tremendous asset,” said Kris McKinnon, head coach of the Hurricanes.
“She is very composed with the ball and has an excellent attitude towards bettering herself in the classroom and on the field.”
The Holland College men’s and women’s soccer teams begin training camp in late August.
The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s regular season starts in early September.
Holland College is the defending women’s champion.
