Island wrestlers capture Canada Cup medals

Island wrestlers brought home two gold and two silver medals from the Canada Cup at the University of Guelph during the weekend.

Winsloe’s Veronica Keefe and Summerside’s Hannah Taylor won their divisions while Kingston’s Lorena Ellis and Summerside’s Ligrit Sadiku finished second.

Keefe, currently wrestling out of Montreal, made short

work of her only opponent, Taylor Follensbee of Saskatchewan, winning by a first-round pin in the senior women 75kg category.

Ellis, who recently won silver at the Junior Pan American Championships, competed in the senior women’s 69kg category despite still being a junior. She defeated Hilary Goble and Kelsey Dayler both by pin, with her only loss coming against Olivia Dibacco from the Brock Wrestling Club.

Ellis is wrestling for the Black Bears Club in Fredericton, N.B.  

In the pre-junior event, Taylor of the Wolfpack Club won gold in the 56kg category, defeating a wrestler from Puerto Rico 9-6 in the gold medal bout.

Sadiku, also of the Wolfpack club, won silver at pre-junior 50kg. Sadiku defeated wrestlers from Puerto Rico and the United States before losing in the final to a member of the South Korean national team.

Steven Clark finished with a 1-2 record in the senior 74kg competition. The division was won by Georg Harth of Germany.

    I sincerely hope that corporate sponsers are getting on board to help these athletes train , or for travel expenses if it is allowed or government, because I know miss lorena ellis for one and she is definitely olympic potential for CANADA
