The Holland College Hurricanes women's hockey team rides into the playoffs with a two-game winning streak after notching back-to-back 3-0 shutouts over the Cape Breton Capers to end the regular season recently in Nova Scotia.
Holland College finished atop the Eastern Canadian Women's Hockey League standings at 8-2-2, followed by the Acadia Axewomen (6-4-2), the UNB Red Blazers (5-4-3) and Capers (1-10-1) in second through fourth, respectively.
Friday, the 'Canes face host and defending champ Acadia to open the championship tournament in Wolfville, N.S. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The round robin portion continues Saturday when Holland College tangles with Cape Breton (5:30 p.m.) and UNB (9:15 p.m.).
Top two teams play for the title Sunday at 2 p.m. The consolation game is at noon.
In last weekend's action, Melissa French, Hayley Foote and Katie-Lynn Cummiskey scored in the first game, while Brailyne Jenkins, Foote and Samantha Woodworth had the 'Canes goals in the second contests.
Kara Mason and Jennie Underwood picked up the shutouts.
Dylynn Barbour, Woodworth, Alyssa Ferguson, Riley Koughan and Alison Squires finished first through fifth, respectively, in league scoring.
Barbour led the league with 12 points, while Squires tied UNB's Sasha Mooney for most goals with seven. Woodworth led the circuit with nine assists.
Mason led all goalies with a 0.67 goals-against-average. Mason and Underwood led the league with two shutouts each.
