Islanders picks attending under-17 camp

Mitchell Balmas was the Charlottetown Islanders first-round pick of the 2014 QMJHL Draft in Sherbrooke, Que.

A trio of Charlottetown Islanders draft picks is in Calgary this week for Hockey Canada’s under-17 development camp.

First-round draft pick Mitchell Balmas, Samuel Guilbault (second round) and Ryan Brushett (sixth round) are among the 96 skaters at the event. There are 12 goalies participating.

The players are divided into six teams and will play a variety of exhibition games from Thursday to Tuesday.

Hockey Canada will use the camp to help select the 66 players to wear the Maple Leaf at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, which is scheduled for Nov. 2 to 8 in Sarnia, Ont.

The tournament will be the first to feature three Canadian national teams as opposed to regional squads.
