Kensington wins fifth straight IJHL title
Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers
The Kensington Moase Heating and Plumbing Vipers dynasty continues.
For the fifth straight year and ninth time in 11 seasons, the Vipers won the Island Junior Hockey League. They defeated the Montague Total Assets Fitness Maniacs 10-7 Saturday in Montague to sweep the final. They didn’t lose once in eight playoff games.
The Maniacs led 3-1 with eight minutes to play in the first period to chase Kensington goalie Dylan McQuaid from the crease. The Vipers responded by outscoring the Maniacs 5-1 to take a 6-4 lead before the period was over. Kensington added two second-period goals to lead 8-4 going to the third.
Spencer McAllister, Adam Wight and Brett Hogan each scored twice in the win while Jordan Mayhew had three assists.
Josh Bowman, Kyle Doucette and Jeremy Jollimore each had a goal and an assist while Ryan Murray rounded out the goal scorers. Logan Garnhum had two helpers while Ryan Kelly and Spencer Montgomery each chipped in one.
Matt Higgins had a hat trick for Montague while Alex Gallant had a goal and three assists.
Matt Myers had a goal and two assists while Damon MacDonald scored and set one up. Chris Stevenson added a goal while assists went to Stewart Branstrom, Sean Corney and Luke Collings.
McQuaid made seven saves before being replaced by Grant Grady, who earned the win with 35 saves on 39 shots. Tyler Whiffen made 47 saves in the loss.
The Vipers will represent the Island at the Don Johnson Memorial Cup in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., April 22 to 27.
