Shannon MacAulay is chasing an American hockey title beginning today in Connecticut.

The 19-year-old Mount Herbert native is a sophomore with the Clarkson Golden Knights, one of four teams playing in the NCAA Frozen Four tournament in Hamden.

“We’re pretty excited,” she said Thursday morning. “We haven’t even started playing yet, and it’s been a great experience already.”

The team left the Potsdam, N.Y., university on Wednesday with a pep rally and a police escort.

It has been a record-setting season for the Golden Knights (29-5-5), who surpassed the team’s previous high for wins in a season of 28, set in 2012-13.

They qualified for the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Boston College on Saturday. Now they are a win away from playing in Sunday’s NCAA championship game in the single-elimination tournament.

“It’s an awesome feeling. Clarkson has never come this far so it’s huge for us,” she said. “It’s a big accomplishment.”

The program has had eight winning seasons in its 10-year history and is looking to take the next step.

Third-ranked Clarkson plays the unranked Mercyhurst Lakers (24-8-4) tonight at 9 p.m. while the other semifinal has No. 4 Wisconsin playing top-ranked Minnesota at 6 p.m. Both times are Atlantic.

Mercyhurst, from Erie, Pennsylvania, knocked off second-ranked Cornell 3-2 to qualify for the semifinal.

MacAulay said the team is confident going in, but the players know it won’t be easy.

“Every team we’re going to face this weekend is going to be really good,” she said. “Hopefully, we can pull through and get that win.”

The Lakers defeated the Knights 2-0 and tied them 1-1 in the only two meetings of the seasons in October.

MacAulay went to Warner Hockey School in Warner, Alta., for grades 9 to 12 and was recruited by a number of NCAA schools.

She picked Clarkson for a number of reasons, including it being located in a small town, the team’s talented players and coaches as well as the atmosphere around the team.

The Golden Knights have seven seniors on their roster.

One of them, Jamie Lee Rattray, led the team in scoring with 28 goals and 34 assists for 62 points — one back of the country’s top scorer.

Another senior is goalie Erica Howe, who led Division I goalies with a 1.04 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
