Red Wings beat Hurricanes in IJHL playoff series opener

ABRAM-VILLAGE — The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings pulled out a wild 8-6 victory over the Holland College Hurricanes in Island Junior Hockey League playoff action on Tuesday night.

The Red Wings, who at one point trailed 5-1 in the second period, were down 3-0 after the opening frame and 5-3 following 40 minutes in Game 1 of the best-of-five quarter-final series.

Game 2 is scheduled for Simmons Sport Centre in Charlottetown on Saturday at 8:15 p.m., with Game 3 back at the Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abram-Village on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, Jeremy Balderston scored three goals and assisted on another, Fidan Feta had two goals and two assists and Brandon Carter assisted on four goals to lead the Red Wings offensively.

Blake Ozon (1-1), Brett Adams and Travis Thibideau had Western’s other goals.

Dan Gallant (2), Nick MacDonald (1-2), Jonny Richards (1-1), Patrick Cummiskey (1-1) and Adam Gardiner scored for the Hurricanes.

Chris Gallant earned the goaltending win over Matt Derry.

Referees Justin DesRoches and Thane Arsenault called 10 minors and one gross misconduct against the Hurricanes.

The Red Wings were called for eight minors and one 10-minute misconduct.
