Capitals sweep Abbies in bantam AAA hockey playoffs

SUMMERSIDE — Sam Bernard had a goal and an assist while Noah Dobson recorded two helpers in leading the Summerside Capitals to a 4-2 series-clinching win over the Mid-Isle Matrix on Monday night.

The Capitals swept the best-of-five semifinal in the P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League, and now await the winner of the series between the O’Leary-based Western Maroons and Charlottetown Abbies.

The teams are tied 1-1 going into Game 3 in O’Leary on Tuesday night (see story page B3).

At Credit Union Place, the teams were even 1-1 after the first period, and Bernard’s goal at 4:23 of the middle frame gave the Caps the lead for good.

Summerside led 3-2 after two periods, and Zach Thususka added an insurance marker at 7:14 of the third period.

Connor McAulay and Brodie MacArthur also scored for the Capitals while Cameron Roberts and Tyler Gallant answered for the Matrix.

Capitals goaltender Caleb Coyle stopped 16 of 18 shots, and Matrix goaltender Tyler Caseley turned aside 19 of 23 shots.
