The Charlottetown Islanders losing streak is over.

The Islanders defeated the Moncton Wildcats 4-3 in a shootout on Thursday to snap a 12-game slide.

“It’s amazing,” Islanders’ goalie Eric Brassard said after the game. “It’s no fun to come to the rink when you lost every time, but now we were able to win tonight and I hope tomorrow is going to be a day like today.”

The Islanders host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (17-33-4-2) tonight at 7 p.m. at Eastlink Centre. The Islanders are one point up on the division rival. There is only four points separating the five teams battling for the final three playoffs spots.

“It’s huge,” assistant captain Craig MacLauchlan said of Thursday’s two points. “Going to the playoffs, we need the points.”

The Islanders were in control of much of Thursday’s game and went to the third period leading 2-1 on goals by Troy Vance and MacLauchlan. The Wildcats scored seven minutes in and pulled ahead with five to play following a turnover in the Islanders’ end.

“The boys just kept going,” said MacLauchlan. “We said, ‘believe,’ and it worked out for us. It was great.”

David Henley took a pass from Vance and blasted a shot from the top of the circle to tie the game with 1:42 to play and Brassard on the bench for the extra attacker.

“I don’t score every game, so it’s a (good) feeling for me,” Henley said. “At the end of the game like that it’s a big goal, too.”

His second of the season forced an uneventful overtime. None of the team’s first two shooters scored in the shootout, setting the stage for Islanders’ rookie Alexandre Goulet. He faked a shot and went five-hole to beat Jason Rioux and Brassard stoned Moncton sniper Ivan Barbashev to complete the victory.

“We need him in these games, and he really played great tonight,” MacLauchlan said of Brassard.

The Islanders last victory came Jan. 10 in a 4-3 shootout against the Shawinigan Cataractes. The Islanders are 6-4 in shootouts this season.
