UPEI Panthers women’s hockey team member Anja Weisser is going to the Olympics.

The veteran Panthers’ defenceman will play for Germany's women’s hockey team in Sochi, Russia. The team was announced this morning.

Germany is in Group B with Japan, Russia and Sweden. They open the tournament against the hosts on Feb. 9.

Weiser, 22, has two goals and an assist in 15 games this season with the Panthers.

The Kaufbeuren native was attending an International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) development camp in Finland in 2008 when she met Kaitlin Murray of Kinkora. After the camp, Weisser asked if there were universities she would recommend.

Murray suggested UPEI and the rest is history. Weisser is studying business administration at UPEI.

“Congrats @AnjaWeisser for making Team Germany!,” Panthers teammate Kiana Strand said on Twitter. “Thanks to you I can say I play with an Olympian!”
