Wildcats win 6-1

Charlottetown’s Ross Johnston scored a pair of goals to lead the Moncton Wildcats to a 6-1 victory over the P.E.I. Rocket Wednesday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action in Moncton.

Ryan Penny added a pair of goals while Alex Saulnier and Yannick Veilleux had singles as the Wildcats improved to 22-12-1 while the Rocket fell to 19-14-2. Johnston, who was named the game’s second star, now has 10 goals on the season.

Ben Duffy from Alexis Pépin and Alex Micallef accounted for the Rocket’s only goal. It was the fifth-year forward’s 24th goal of the season and came on the power play with five seconds to play in the first period.

Conor Garland had three assists in the victory while Ivan Barbashev had two and singles went to Jonathan Narbonne, Allain Saulnier, Mark Tremaine, James Melindy and Danick Emond.

Alex Dubeau made 25 saves for the win while Maxime Lagace stopped 32 shots in the loss.

The Wildcats led 2-1 after the first and 4-1 following the second in front of 3,303 fans.

The Rocket was outshot 21-9 in the first period, but rebounded for a 13-6 edge in the second. The Wildcats had an 11-4 advantage in the third.

The Rocket had won the previous nine meetings between the clubs dating back to the early part of 2011-12.

The Rocket plays its final game before the Christmas break Friday in northern New Brunswick against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (12-19-4-1) at 7:30 p.m.
