Lots of teams still in contention going into final day of round-robin play

SUMMERSIDE – Eve Muirhead and Silvana Tirinzoni are each one win away from going undefeated in round-robin play at the 2014 Players’ Championship.

Muirhead and Tirinzoni, who sport identical 4-0 records, will close out round-robin play in Friday’s 9:30 a.m. draw Muirhead will take on Heather Nedohin (1-3), and Tirinzoni will meet Olympic silver-medallist Margaretha Sigfridsson (3-1).

The women’s round robin of the final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season will conclude Friday at 1 p.m. If need be, a tiebreaker will be played at 8:30 p.m.

A number of teams are still in playoff contention on the women’s side.

Jennifer Jones, who has won three games in a row, pulled out a 7-6 win over Sigfridsson in a rematch of the Olympic gold-medal game on Thursday night. The result left both teams tied for second place at 3-1. Three teams – Rachel Homan, Crystal Webster and Stefanie Lawton – are still very much in the mix at 2-2.

Muirhead downed Webster 9-2 in five ends while Tirinzoni pulled out a 7-5 win over Val Sweeting (1-3).

One game that had a huge impact on the standings was Lawton’s 7-2 five-end victory over Homan, who missed an opportunity to move into a tie with Jones and Sigfridsson.

Also Thursday night, Sherry Middaugh collected her first win in four games by outscoring Julie Hastings 8-6. Hastings is 0-4.

Friday’s draws are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. The playoffs begin Saturday.
