Jamie Newson has earned the first playoff spot at the P.E.I. Men’s Tankard Provincial Championships at the Montague Curling Club.
Newson scored four in the ninth to double Eddie MacKenzie 8-4 Friday in the A qualifier at the triple-knockout event.
The Charlottetown Curling Complex rink scored singles in the first two ends. The teams traded singles the next two ends while MacKenzie scored a deuce in the sixth to tie it. The teams traded singles the next two ends before Newson ended it in the ninth.
Newson will play the winner of tonight’s B final between MacKenzie and Robert Campbell in the A-B Page playoff contest on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Campbell scored four in the six to defeat Rod MacDonald 9-7 Friday afternoon. Campbell also scored a deuce in the second and singles in the fourth, eighth and 10th ends while MacDonald answered with singles in the first, third and fifth ends and two in the seventh and ninth.
The final is Sunday at 7 p.m.
