Play continues today at the Silver Fox club in Summerside
The playoffs are now set for the P.E.I. masters curling championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
The men’s semifinalists and finalist, along with the three qualifiers for the women’s championship round, have now been determined.
The 2012 women’s champion, Shirley Berry, scored singles in the first seven ends to blank 2013 winner Diane MacKay 7-0 in the final women’s double-round-robin round on Wednesday afternoon. That win secured first place on the strength of a 4-2 (won-lost) record, and a berth in today’s 2 p.m. final. Both teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club.
MacKay and Norma Sonier from The Fox both finished at 3-3, and will play a semifinal game on today at 10 a.m., with the winner facing Berry in the final.
Sonier beat the other team in the event, skipped by Cornwall’s Gloria Clarke, 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon to advance. Clarke finished play at 2-4.
The last three qualifiers for the four-team men’s Page round were determined on Wednesday, with the John Holmes rink from the Silver Fox grabbing the B qualifier with a 9-5 win over the Brian Ellis foursome from Crapaud in morning action.
The Ted MacFadyen-skipped rink from the host club secured the A qualifier berth on Tuesday. MacFadyen stole a deuce in the seventh end to break a 3-3 tie en route to a 5-3 win over Holmes in Wednesday afternoon’s late draw.
That win guaranteed MacFadyen a berth in today’s final at 2 p.m., while Holmes will play Ellis in today’s semifinal at 10 a.m. Ellis stayed alive with a 6-5 win over Clair Sweet of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary in the Page C-vs.-D sudden-death game in Wednesday’s late-afternoon draw.
Earlier in the day, Sweet defeated Paul Arsenault of Cornwall 8-5 to capture the C berth, and Ellis grabbed the final spot by doubling Louis Walsh from the host club 6-3 score.
Winners and runners-up in both the men’s and the women’s divisions earn the right to compete in the Maritime masters championships at the Cornwall Curling Club from March 14 to 17.
The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2014 ATB Financial Canadian masters championships in Coaldale Alta., from March 31 to April 6.
