Bluefield Bobcats One outlasted Colonel Gray Colonels Two 79-69 in the opener of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association boys AA basketball championship Monday.
The Bobcats led 36-32 at the half and 52-50 after three quarters.
With 4:53 to play, Bluefield was up 64-62 but a trey by Isaac Cheverie and a hoop by Alex MacKenzie gave the 'Cats a lead they would not give up. Dylan MacKinnon had 23 points, Cheverie 19 and Josh Fall, MacKenzie and Keegan McCarvill all had 10. Cheverie added 14 boards and MacKinnon 11 rebounds.
For the Colonels, Jesse Flemming had 16 points, Melvin Sim-Turay 14, Jonatan MacKenzie 13 and Kallum Muirhead 13, plus 10 boards and five blocks.
The teams advance to medal play later in week.
Kensington 46, Rural Two 35
Game one was too much Jordan Montgomery and Bailey Clark as the Kensington Torchmen defeated Rural Two Raiders 46-35.
Kensington led 19-12 at the half.
Montgomery had four blocks, 17 rebounds, six being on offensive boards and 21 points while Clark added 14 points and ran the offence.
For the Raiders, Donovan Ching had nine points and Isaac Judson chipped in with eight.
The teams wait for game two winners to play Thursday at Charlottetown Rural.
Francois Buote 61, Montague 50
The second men's A semifinal saw Francois Buote battle hard and pull away at the end to defeat Montague Vikings 61-50.
They led 30-26 at half and Montague took a 43-30 lead on a trey by David Thompson at the third quarter buzzer.
Francois Buote's Joseph Chevarie and Sam Carmody took over in the fourth and led the Jaguars to the win.
For Montague, Kyle Parlee had 14 points and nine boards with Thompson hitting for 13 and Dyllan Bernard 10.
For Francois Buote, Chaverie had 20, Carmody 17 and Malcolm Gilman 13.
Montague plays Rural Two for the bronze Thursday at 4 p.m. while Francois Buote and Kensington play for gold at 8 p.m., all at Charlottetown Rural.
Bluefield 37, Gray Two 28
Bluefield Bobcats held Colonel Gray Two Colonels to just five fourth quarter points en route to a 37-28 victory on Monday.
Gray led 15-12 at the half and, with five seconds were left in third quarter Bluefield took the lead on a hoop by Grace Coles.
Strong rebounding and tough defence spurred the Bobcats fourth-quarter rally. Haley Cole and Coles each had eight points for Bluefield while Lise Charles had eight for Gray and Keisha Judson and Alleyiah Villard each had six. Villard chipped in with 11 boards.
Medal play is Thursday.
TOSH Two 60, Kinkora 30
Three Oaks Two coasted to a convincing 60-30 victory over Kinkora.
The Axewomen led 26-12 at half and 47-21 after three quarters.
For the Blazers, Jillian Lawless had 10 points and Alexis Mulligan 13.
For Three Oaks, Shelanna Cole had 16 points, Caleigh Shea had eight and Caitlin Arsenault and Emily Steele each had seven.
Three Oaks Two will face Bluefield One for gold on Thursday while Kinkora and Gray Two will play for bronze. All games are at Charlottetown Rural High School.
