Hurricanes sweep Seawolves to clinch regular season titles

The Holland Hurricanes Hurricanes basketball teams clinched first place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) by sweeping weekend games with the UNBSJ Seawolves in Charlottetown.

The women’s team won 85-38 and 78-38 to propel their record to 15-1.

Jenea Barrett led the Hurricanes Sunday with 16 points while Milcania Diaz Rojas added 11. The top rebounders were Marvia Dean (16), Barrett (13) and Ashley Moss (12).

Sara Simkins scored 12 points to lead UNBSJ.

The ‘Canes held quarter leads of 28-9, 50-19 and 64-26.

Barrett scored 25 to pace the Hurricanes Saturday while Moss (13) and Candace Smith (11) each had double-digit point totals.

Kathryn Magee was the Seawolves top scorer with 12 points.

The Hurricanes held quarter leads of 29-10, 47-16 and 63-24 in the game.

Holland College leads the Crandall Chargers (11-3), Mount Allison Mounties (9-5) and Mount Saint Vincent Mystics (9-6).


Jayden Nordin scored 24 points and Trevone Grant added 22 as the Hurricanes men’s team won 108-55 on Sunday.

Travis Adams added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley chipped in 14 points.

Matthew Brown led the Seawolves had 15 points.

Leads of 17-15, 44-26 and 81-39 at the end of each quarter propelled the Hurricanes to the victory.

Whyley led the way offensively on Saturday with 28 points in a 100-85 win.

Grant (21), Adams (14), Matthew Morrison (13) and Tevin Bailey (10) all had double-digit point totals. Grant added 12 rebounds.

Paul Gerges paced the Seawolves with 20 points.

The Hurricanes trailed 25-23 after the first quarter before jumping out to leads of 54-35 and 77-54 after the second and third quarters, respectively.

The ‘Canes (17-1) lead the King’s Blue Devils (14-4), Mystics (12-6) and Crandall (11-6).

Both Hurricanes team’s return to action on Saturday when they host the St. Thomas Tommies at 2 (women) and 4 p.m. (men).

The ACAA championships will take place March 4 to 6 at the Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. The Hurricanes are the defending conference champions in both divisions.
