The UPEI Panthers struck first in their weekend battle with the Memorial Sea-Hawks in their push for an Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball playoff spot.

The Panthers outscored the Sea-Hawks 28-15 in the first quarter Saturday en route to a 72-63 win.

Veteran Tamara Tompkins had 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Panthers.

Jane McLaughlin had 13 points and 12 rebounds while Anne Kiberd scored 17 points and Katie Donahoe 12, as the Panthers starters played all but 21 minutes.

Sydney Stewart and Lindsay Taylor each had 16 points for Memorial.

UPEI led 40-24 at the half and 55-35 after three quarters, but Memorial outscored the Panthers 28-17 in the final 10 minutes.

The game was worth four points in the standings.

UPEI (5-12) is four points up on St. FX (3-13) for the final playoff spot, but has played one more game than the X-Women. Memorial (2-15) has six points.

UPEI hosts Memorial Sunday at 11 a.m. in the final home game for Donahoe, Tompkins, Kiberd and Elysia Drost.

Saturday’s game also saw the return of Mark English to UPEI. He coached the Panthers last season before going home to St. John’s, N.L., in the offseason to coach where he used to play.
