P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts could be decided Sunday night

MONTAGUE – The Suzanne Birt rink has moved into the driver’s seat of the P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Summerside native Suzanne Birt.

Birt, a Summerside native, and new rink of third stone Robyn Green, second stone Meaghan Hughes and lead Marie Christianson defeated 10-time provincial champion Kim Dolan twice on Saturday – 8-5 in the A section final and 10-4 to win the B section.

The B section final was tied 2-2 after four ends, but Birt scored a triple to lead 5-2 at the fifth-end break. Dolan took singles in six and seven, but Birt scored a deuce in eight and then recorded a triple in end nine.

If Birt wins the C final on Sunday at 7 p.m., her team will be crowned provincial women’s curling champions, and will not have to play the championship round. If Birt doesn’t win the C final, she will have “double life” on Monday and her opponent will have to win both games.

In the C semifinals on Sunday at 2 p.m., Birt will take on Lisa Jackson while Dolan plays Shelly Bradley.

Jackson eliminated the host club’s Tammy Dewar rink with a 9-4 win this evening, picking up five points in the sixth end while Bradley, trailing 6-5 coming home with hammer, scored three points in the final end to eliminate Sarah Fullerton with an 8-6 win.

Dewar is the only non-Charlottetown rink in the six-team event.

The winning rink will represent P.E.I. at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie, Alta., from Feb. 20 to 28.

Future Scotties

In the Future Scotties developmental event for female curlers under age 21, the Alexis Burris rink defeated their Cornwall clubmates, the Emma Coffin team, 11-3 on Saturday night.

Burris (2-0) and Charlottetown’s Katelyn Shaw (1-0) are undefeated in the round-robin series, where each team plays three games. Shaw plays Lauren Ferguson while Burris takes on Rachel MacLean on Sunday morning.

The event wraps up as Shaw plays Coffin and MacLean takes on Ferguson on Sunday at 2 p.m..
