Tamara Tompkins scored 21 points and added six rebounds to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 73-56 win Wednesday over the Acadie Axewomen at the Thunder Selects holiday classic basketball tournament in Halifax.
Point guard Katie Donahoe had 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in the victory. Angenay Willams chipped in 14 points, six boards and five steals while Keira Rigby scored 12 points.
Chanel Smith led the Axewomen with 19 points while Paloma Anderson added 14.
The game was tied at 18 after the first quarter while UPEI took 32-25 and 54-40 leads after subsequent periods.
The Panthers had 14 steals while the Axewomen had two. It helped lead to 20 more field-goal attempts for the Panthers. UPEI also made 90 per cent of their 20 free throws and nailed nine of their 26 three-point shots (35 per cent).
The Panthers went 2-1 at the tournament.
They are 2-5 in the regular season while Acadia leads the conference at 7-0.
UPEI starts the second half of the season on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at home against Saint Mary’s.
