Island squad 1-1 after first weekend of NBL regular season
The Island Storm defeated the Moncton Miracles 130-117 Sunday for their first win of the National Basketball League of Canada regular season.
It came a day after losing their season-opening contest 121-106 to the Saint John Mill Rats Saturday at the Eastlink Centre.
Brent Jennings led all scorers Sunday in Moncton with 32 while Mike Martin contributed 30 points and five rebounds.
“I was really pleased with the overall performance today,” said Storm coach Joe Salerno. “Our keys guys stepped up today with Mike (Martin) and Brent Jennings having a great game.”
The Storm held quarter leads of 36-26, 75-54 and 99-89.
The Storm opened up a 23-point lead in the third quarter, but the Miracles fought back and cut the deficit to five. A timeout called by Salerno seemed to calm his team down and they got the lead back to double digits and didn’t look back.
“I think that this game helps builds our confidence,” said Jennings. “We dropped a close one to Moncton in the pre-season and we needed to make a statement to the NBL that we can compete with anyone.”
Storm guard Rashad Whack added 19 points, Brian Addison had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Evans scored 12 and collected nine boards.
The Storm hosts the Halifax Hurricanes Thursday for its annual New Year’s Eve game at 7 p.m.
