A trio of Islanders is in Alberta preparing for their first races of the biathlon season.

Caitlin Campbell and twin brothers Lucas and André Boudreau are in Canmore for the NorAm Cup One on Saturday and Sunday.

It is a warm up for the big competition on Dec. 17, 19 and 20 where the three are hoping to make Team Canada for the world youth and junior championships in Romania, from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1.

“Race my own race, ski fast and shoot straight,” Lucas said, when asked what were keys for him to be successful.

The 18-year-old Boudreaus from Elmwood will be trying to be two of the four men on the youth team while Campbell is searching for a place on the four-woman junior squad.

My “shooting has come along way from where it was last year,” Lucas said. “Range times are faster and everything is more consistent.”

He pointed to spending more time practising at home without live ammunition, in what he called dry firing, as a key to improving his shooting.

The three competed in the world-qualifying event a year ago.

Lucas finished ninth, Andre 12th and Campbell 11th. Campbell helped Team P.E.I. finish fifth in the relay at the Canada Games in Prince George, B.C., in February and an Island best for an individual female of ninth in the sprint.

This year she has her eyes set on taking the next step.

“The goal for me is to qualify for this world junior team,” said Campbell, a 19-year-old Central Bedeque native.

“I’m really trying to focus on my shooting right now,” she added. “It can mean so much. One missed shot can blow your whole race.”

The three had a few weeks off in April before starting to train on roller skis to prepare them for this winter. They went to Quebec in mid November to practice on snow and have been in Alberta for a few days to get used to the surroundings and prepare for the races.

“I feel a lot more prepared this year,” Campbell said.
