Island Wrestling Academy athletes won eight medals at the Quebec open wrestling tournament last weekend in Montreal.

Hannah Taylor won gold in the 60-kilogram juvenile/junior division, Noah Daley finished first in the 105-kg division and Ben Tanton took top spot in the 54-kg class.

Winning silver medals were: Savanna MacLauchlan, 70-kg bantam/cadet; Daniel Moase, 42-kg bantam/cadet; Nolan O’Rourke, 46-kg bantam class; and Rory Gaudet, 50-kg bantam/cadet. Zack MacNevin claimed a bronze medal in the men’s 68-kg bantam/cadet weight class. There were also a few fourth-place finishes.

Coaches Nik Cummins, Liz Lee and Steven Banks were impressed with the way the wrestlers competed on the weekend.

“These athletes have worked hard all fall,” said Cummins, Wrestling P.E.I.’s high performance centre coach. “Some are Canada Games-age eligible and their showings didn’t hurt the future look for that type of competition.”

The Island coaches continue to build their club, which operates out of the Colonel Gray High School. For more information on the club or Wrestling P.E.I., contact gflood@sportpei.pe.ca.
