Skip Suzanne Birt releases her rock Sunday during the final game in the Curl Atlantic Championships at MacLauchlan Arena.
MOOSE JAW, Sask. – It was a winning start for the Suzanne Birt rink!
Birt, third stone Shelly Bradley, second stone Michelle McQuaid and lead Susan McInnis defeated New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud 8-2 in their opening draw of the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Saturday night. The teams shook hands after eight ends.
After the teams blanked the first three ends, Birt, who curled a game-high 93 per cent, scored a deuce with the hammer in the fourth end, and then stole three in the fifth to go into the breakup 5-0.
Robichaud got two back in the sixth, but Birt counted a single in the seventh and then stole a deuce a in the eighth.
Birt and her Charlottetown Curling Complex team are back in action at the Canadian women’s curling championship on Sunday. They take on Newfoundland and Labrador’s Heather Strong (0-1) at 4 p.m., and Northern Ontario’s Tracy Horgan (0-1) at 9 p.m. Both starts are P.E.I. times.
