Recreation departments in O'Leary and Tignish will be joining forces this weekend to host the Eastern Canadian men's and women's orthodox softball championships.

Teams in both divisions will be represented by Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I. with playing starting in both communities Friday at 1 p.m. and concluding late Sunday evening in O'Leary.

Twelve teams will be coming to Western P.E.I. providing a great economic spinoff for the area, said O'Leary recreation director Jeff Ellsworth.

"It's great to be able to partner with the Community of Tignish. We need to start doing more bigger events together in Western P.E.I.," he said.

Tignish recreation director Karen Doyle said the event will provide a great economic spinoff for the community.

"Teams will be coming into our community, playing ball, but also spending money which is great for local businesses, so it's a win-win," she said.

Ellsworth said softball is on the rise in Western P.E.I. and there is a lot of buzz following the Team Canada game with the Summerside Chrysler Dodge Eagles.

"Having this Eastern Canadian will keep the ball rolling," he said. "You can never have to many events in your community for the youth to see."

O'Leary will also be hosting the under-12 regional boys championships Sept. 12 to 14 featuring teams from Quebec, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
