Checkered flag drops Saturday in Nova Scotia for stock tour

The Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour opens the stock car racing season Saturday with the Harry Poole Memorial 100, presented by Lucas Oil, at Scotia Speedworld near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia.

It launches a 12-race schedule that takes the tour to five Maritime markets during the next 17 weeks.

Qualifying for the Harry Poole Memorial 100 begins at 3:10 p.m., racing at 4 p.m. Grandstand gates open at 1 p.m.

John Flemming (Halifax) won the season opener last year en route to his fourth series championship (2002, 2003, 2006, 2013). Two fellow multi-time series champions are also expected in today’s field in Shawn Tucker (Fredericton), a three-time series champion,  and Shawn Turple (Enfield, N.S.) who has won twice. Six Island drivers Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell), Kent Vincent (Westmoreland), Terry Dougay (Albany), Darren MacKinnon (Charlottetown), Greg Proude (Springvale), Dylan Gosbee (Cornwall), are expected to start the race.

Sarah McKay (Quispamsis, N.B.) will debut as the first female to pilot a car on the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour. The Maritime League of Legends kicks off its campaign with a 50-lap feature prior to the main event. Admission is $25 for adults $5 for youth. Pit admission is $30. Children under seven-years-old for free.
