Hurricanes bounced in first round of basketball nationals

The Holland College Hurricanes were eliminated from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association basketball championship Thursday.

The men lost 115-102 in overtime to Vanier College in Squamish, B.C. while the women lost 104-57 to the Algonquin Thunder in St-Lambert, Que.

The men led 26-17 after the first quarter and 47-40 at halftime. They went to the third trailing 71-69 after being outscored 31-22.

Individual statistics were not available.

The men will play at 5 p.m. ADT today against Concordia.

Chase Bowden was named to the 10-player all-Canadian team at Wednesday night’s banquet after averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds during the season.

The women Hurricanes fell behind 22-10 after the first quarter and would trail 47-26 at the half and 67-45 heading to the fourth quarter.

Individual statistics were not available.

They play the loser of Thursday’s late game between St. Thomas and Champlain today at 4 p.m. ADT.
