Men's basketball team currently tied for second in AUS

The UPEI Panthers knocked off the top Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s basketball team Saturday in Wolfville, N.S.

The Panthers defeated the Acadia Axemen 88-80 to improve to 6-6. Acadia falls to 8-3. Acadia had won four in a row.

Wolfville’s Ellis Ffrench led the Panthers with 19 points and five assists while Deontay (D.J.) Smith had 17 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Donathan (Donnie) Moss had 14 points, eight board and four steals while Geoff Doane had 14 points and six rebounds.

Owen Klassen had 17 points to lead the Axemen while Anthony Sears and Shaquille Smith each added 15.

Acadia led 25-22 after the first quarter while the Panthers took a 48-41 lead to the half and a 72-59 advantage to the fourth quarter.

The Panthers host UNB Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.

Elsewhere Saturday, Memorial defeated UNB 80-76 and Cape Breton beat Saint Mary’s 77-75.
