Women's basketball team loses to CIS top squad

The UPEI Panthers hung with the country’s top women’s team for two quarters Saturday in Halifax before the Saint Mary’s Huskies pulled away.

The Panthers scored 17 points in each of the first two quarters but managed only 17 in the final half in an 88-51 loss.

The Huskie held quarter leads of 21-17, 35-34 and 58-42.

Laura Langille had 21 for the Huskies while Justine Colley and Rachelle Coward each had 20.

Danielle MacDonald scored 14 for the Panthers while Amy Gough added nine. The Panthers shot 28 per cent from the field, hit one of 14 from behind the arc and hit two-thirds of their free throws.

It is the fourth straight loss for UPEI (4-6) while Saint Mary’s is 10-0. Saturday’s game was worth four points.

UPEI plays Friday at Acadia at 6 p.m.
