Joe Salerno

The Island Storm has successfully appealed coach Joe Salerno’s two-game suspension and $200 fine.

The appeal was launched after a suspension was handed down based on an incident following the Storm game in Moncton on Dec. 27 where Salerno was accused of bumping a referee following the game.

“Our appeal was based on our belief that the suspension was based on incorrect facts,” said Storm co-owner Duncan Shaw. “We were glad the league’s appeal panel agreed with us, and that the suspension was reduced to reflect the fact that coach did not initiate contact with an official.”

Coach Salerno did approach the official after the game so the suspension for a single game stands.

The one-game suspension is effective immediately, which means Salerno will not be on the bench Saturday when the London Lightning visit Eastlink Centre to take on the Storm at 7 p.m. Storm assistant coach Mike Leslie will coach the Storm against the defending NBL champions.
