Belfast Surge joins P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League for 2012-13

The Belfast Rec Centre will have junior hockey for the first time since 2005-06 after the Belfast Surge was approved as an expansion team at a Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League meeting on Tuesday.

Belfast replaces the Holland College Junior Hurricanes which moved to junior B hockey for this season in the Island Junior Hockey League.

The eight-team junior C circuit now includes squads based in Tyne Valley, Pownal, Tignish, Charlottetown, Morell, North River, Belfast and Crapaud.

Also, the league will adopt shootouts in the event of a tie at the end of overtime during the regular season.

The 28-game campaign begins Friday, Oct. 19.

An official schedule will be released in early October.

Playoffs start on Friday, Feb. 8.

The league champion will  represent P.E.I. at the 2013 Maritime-Hockey North Junior C championship, tournament, April 3 to 7, in Hampton, N.B.
