Just when Lynn Kuehn appeared to have things under control, the course fought back Wednesday.
Kuehn’s 7-over par 81 in Round 2 was a huge switch after she shot a career-best 70 Tuesday during the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Senior Women’s Golf Championship at the Belvedere Golf Club.
Still, Kuehn finished in a three-way tie for first place going into today's final round.
The Lacombe, Alta., resident’s two-round 151 is at par with Helene Chartrand of Pincourt, Que., and Mary Anne Hayward of Aurora, Ont.
“I started out a little nervous. I had a seven on the second hole and hit a couple of shots and went ‘whoa,’” said Kuehn. “I wasn't hitting the ball crisp, just wasn’t getting on the greens.”
Islanders make cut
Wednesday was also cut day and just three of nine Islanders are playing in today’s final round.
That trio includes Debbie Beck of Montague and Pamela Ling of Charlottetown, tied at 170 (85-85), and Susan Allen of Charlottetown at 172 (88-84).
The top 70 and ties moved on.
Other P.E.I. scores were: Myrna Millar of Ellerslie, 174 (85-89); Joyce MacLellan of Indian River, 180 (88-95); Paula Buote of Tignish, 190 (91-99); Sylvia Sampson of Charlottetown, 197 (95-102); Donna McKenna of Charlottetown, 213 (105-108); Dixie Haley of Stratford, 214 (107-107).
Ontario won the inter-provincial team competition with a two-round 304 total over British Columbia (307) and Alberta (310).
P.E.I. finished ninth with a 340 score.
Kuehn also had bogeys on holes 5, 8, 11, 13, 15 and 17. A chance for a third birdie in the round came on the 18th, but she pushed it just wide.
She did birdie holes 3 and 10.
A lack of sleep might have played a part in the tougher second round.
“Two-and-a-half hours (last night) would be big,” said Kuehn.
Or a prevailing gusty westerly wind facing down golfers on the 18th fairway could have been a factor.
But Kuehn wouldn’t buy into either scenario and was already preparing mentally for today’s round.
“No, you had to use an extra club. I knew that. You can't blame the wind,” said the 52-year-old. “I’m just going out with the same game plan, hopefully hit the greens. My putting has been decent. I was near the hole all day.”
Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, B.C., leads the super senior division for players 60 or older with a two-round 155 total.
