The Hunter’s Ale House Mudmen improved to 3-0 in the Nova Scotia Rugby Men’s Second Division after a 39-12 win over Caledonia on Saturday in Cape Breton.
The Mudmen opened up the scoring when scrumhalf Dexter Coughlin picked his way through defenders to give the P.E.I. side an early lead.
Trys from Mudmen backliners Brodie MacDonald, Charlie Waddell and Jon William MacDonald upped the Island squad’s lead which went to 27-0 at half time.
“We moved the ball well and were aggressive attacking their line,’’ said Mudmen center Phil Gallant. “It was clear we were fitter and more prepared.’’
The second half was a similar story. Mudmen forwards controlled the play leading to the first try of the season for Mudmen captain Justin Ellis.
Late penalties and a blocked kick allowed Cape Breton to get on the board, but the Mudmen defence gave Caledonia no more opportunities to get back into the game.
The Mudmen have a bye this week then resume July 7 against Pictou County in Charlottetown.
Game time is 2 p.m. at Co-op Field.
