The Saint Mary's Huskies snapped UPEI's three-game winning streak when it downed the Panthers 5-3 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action Saturday night in Halifax.
The loss split the Panthers' road weekend, after a dominating 7-3 win over the St. FX X-MEN in Antigonish Friday, and brought UPEI's regular season record to 11-7.
Saint Mary's Patrick O'Keefe netted the game-winner with his second goal of the night at 1:24 in the third period. The Huskies' other goals were scored by Shawn O'Donnell, Cam Fergus and Colby Pridham.
Panther goals were scored by Chad Locke and Jared Gomes (2).
Saint Mary's Neil Conway stopped 27 of 30 shots faced while UPEI's Mavric Parks stopped 27 of 31.
Locke opened Saturday's scoring in UPEI's favour when he found the net at 14:42. O'Donnell tied it up for the Huskies at 16:47, while O'Keefe found the net at 18:51 to give Saint Mary's the lead going into the second period.
The Huskies' Cam Fergus was the only player to score in the second, finding the net at 18:26.
O'Keefe netted the game winner less than two minutes into the third at 1:24. Gomes fought back for the Panthers, scoring short-handed at 5:30 and on the powerplay at 19:33.
But it wasn't enough, as Pridham scored on an empty UPEI net at 19:56 to seal the game for the Huskies.
UPEI play their next game Wednesday, Jan. 18, when the team will face the archrival Moncton Blue Eagles at MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown. Game time is 7 p.m.
