Prominent members of the Canadian wheelchair curling community will be in the province this weekend, as teams from across the region compete in a series of games at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

In addition to the games between New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, the teams will enjoy a weekend camp and instruction with national program manager Wendy Morgan, two-time Paralympic gold medallist and world champion Sonja Gaudet and Dr. Laura Farres of Mind in Motion Consulting.

Dr. Farres has been the mental performance consultant for the Canadian wheelchair curling team since 2006.

Also attending will be Helen Radford, executive director of Curl Atlantic.

This will be the first inter-provincial competition for wheelchair curlers held on the Island.

The P.E.I. team includes Jamie Thompson, Eric Payne, Paul Cudmore, James Poirier and coach Ron Matters.

The team practises at the Crapaud club, which has been renovated to cater to wheelchair curlers.

The camp is geared to those athletes who are considering competing at the wheelchair curling nationals and will consist of technical reviews, on-ice drills, off-ice strategies, mental preparation, and team dynamics.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and runs through until lunchtime on Sunday.

For more information on the camp, or wheelchair curling and the programs offered, contact Gayle Johnston at 368-1071 or gaylej@pei.sympatico.ca.
